I work on each of my pieces spontaneously and intuitively, producing finished works that often surprise me. Often, the visual idea comes way before I realize what the image is about conceptually. Sometimes, it takes years before I can look back and really feel that I understand it. Allowing myself this freedom, I create emotionally charged pieces, purposefully open to interpretation. My style, in any medium, is influenced by my experience with printmaking, and by graffiti/street art, art nouveau, and probably in some way or another by every artist before me, whether I realize it or not. I have a fondness for black outlines (despite all my teachers trying to hammer it out of me since I was young), contrast, a balance of messiness and clean lines, texture and depth built up in layers, and toeing the edge of too much or too little. I find inspiration from many ordinary, boring, everyday things, but I think a lot about people's relationships with each other and their environment, contradictions, feelings of isolation and over-saturation, and just different aspects of the human condition at present. Whatever the subject is, I always like to portray it with a quiet dignity and strength, reflecting what I see in so many of the people I have known. |
